Teaching About Africa K-12 Conference

International Africa scholars convened in Washington, DC for the African Studies Association 54th Annual Meeting. In conjunction with this conference, the ASA offered a special workshop for teachers on Saturday, November 19th. The program included presentations and teaching materials from scholars and educators representing Africa centers at universities across the country. This year’s conference also featured a showcase of exemplary school-based projects on Africa in the fields of visual arts, literary arts, performing arts, science, history, and more.
Sessions at the workshop included presentations and materials for teaching about:

- Medieval Africa: Kingdoms of Ghana & Mali
- Mighty Maps: Hands-on Project for Studying Africa in Contemporary Ways
- Wangari Maathai and the Green Belt Movement – Human Rights and the Environment

- Discovering Africa in America: Recent Research and Resources
- Teaching about Africa through Arab Eyes: Common History & Post-Colonial Misery
- African Novels in the Classroom
- Interpreting Crises, Celebrating Success: Helping Students Understand Post-colonial Africa
